World No Tobacco Day
World
No-Tobacco Day (WNTD) is celebrated around the world every year on 31 May.
WHO Member States created WNTD in 1987 to draw global attention to the
tobacco epidemic and to the preventable death and disease it causes. The
vigorousness and visibility of WNTD activities has increased manifold after
the setting up of the National Tobacco Control Cell. In 2005, the
global theme is “Role of Health Professionals and Tobacco Control”.
The rationale for the theme is to highlight the role of health
professionals in tobacco control.

On the occasion of World No
Tobacco Day a sensitization workshop for key members of various health
professionals associations was organized by HRIDAY–SHAN, a voluntary
organization of health professionals and social scientists, in
collaboration with WHO India Office and Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare, in New Delhi.
Senior representatives of major health professional bodies like the Indian
Medical Association, Indian Dental Association, and Indian Pediatric
Association, Indian Psychological Association and Trained Nurses
Association of India, Cardiological Society of
India, Association of Physicians of India and others participated. This
unique workshop brought together health professionals from different
medical fields such as medical doctors, dentists, psychologists,
psychiatrists, pharmacists and para-medical staff
to brainstorm on main areas of tobacco control, where health professional
organizations can make a considerable impact and developed a road map for
taking this initiative forward to all the states.
During the inaugural
ceremony, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss,
Hon'ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare
and Dr S.J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India, released the Executive Summary of the
report “Tobacco Control in India”.
The workshop was followed by a press conference where Dr Habayeb and Mrs. Bhavani Thyagarajan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health &
Family Welfare, along with technical experts, addressed the media on the
role of health professionals in tobacco control and related policy and
legislative issues.
