I. Capacity building at National/State level for tobacco
control
· Technical
support extended to the National Tobacco Control Cell and the six State
Tobacco Control Cells in all the 6 regions viz. North, South, East, West,
Central and North-East regions of the country.
· Dedicated TFI office set up at Central Health Education
Bureau (CHEB), New Delhi.
Trainings/Seminars
· A national coordination
meeting on tobacco control with representation from key stakeholder
Ministries was organized by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in
collaboration with WHO. This was the first meeting
with multi-stakeholders for advancing tobacco control was convened by the Hon’ble Union Health Minister and Secretary (Health). The
representatives from different Ministries/Departments like Labour, Information & Broadcasting, Commerce,
Consumer Affairs etc as well as civil society organizations were sensitized
on tobacco control measures. Brainstorming session was conducted to review
the status of implementation of tobacco control activities at central and
state level; and strategies were discussed for multi-sectoral action for effective
implementation of a national programme.
· Series of intensive trainings
organized for State Focal Points and Tobacco Control Consultants in
collaboration with John Hopkins School of Public Health.
· Technical support provided to
Advocacy Forum for Tobacco Control (AFTC) for organizing a national training
workshop for law enforcers from 18 states in January, 2008.
· State Focal Points and other
officials participated in the Leadership program at John Hopkins Bloomberg
School of Public Health.
Capacity building among civil
society and other stakeholders:
· Sensitization workshop on
Bloomberg Global Initiative for various stakeholders like civil society,
govt. officials supported in 2007.
· National training workshop on
tobacco control for NGO representatives was organized in collaboration with
HRIDAY in 2008.
· Training workshop for health
professionals from various hospitals/institutions organized at NIMHANS, Bangalore
and the strategies for
tobacco cessation at clinical and community level developed.

Key Initiatives undertaken by State Tobacco Control Cells:
· Uploading
of tobacco control laws on state official websites.
· Notification
of authorized officials for enforcement of the provisions of tobacco control
laws.
· Initiation of State/District level
Monitoring Committee for effective implementation of Section 5 of the Act
like Assam, Gujarat, Tamil
Nadu, West
Bengal.
· Development
and dissemination of anti-tobacco IEC materials in regional languages.
· Organization
of workshops/seminars for sensitizing law enforcers on tobacco control laws.
· Initiation
of efforts to bring various state government departments on a common platform
for advancing tobacco control.
