World No Tobacco Day 2008

Tobacco Cessation Centre (TCC) at
Cancer Institute, Chennai commemorated World No Tobacco Day 2008 in
collaboration with Tamil Nadu Tobacco Control
Coalition, Indian Dental Association, State Tobacco Control Cell, Government
of Tamil Nadu and Ministry of Health Family
Welfare.
The programme
was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss and was
attended by several dignitaries. The Hon’ble Health
Minister announced the notification on rules related to prohibition on
smoking in public places. On this occasion, seven dental colleges in Chennai
which were declared “Tobacco Free” were also felicitated.
 
In
addition, the peer counselors and youth advocates of different colleges
trained by the TCC organized a campaign called ‘Donate a cigarette or tobacco
product and save 14 minutes of your life’. Through this campaign, they went
around the city and requested the tobacco users to drop tobacco products in
the box which they carried along with them.
