World No Tobacco Award, 2005
Every year WHO
presents the World No Tobacco Day Award in recognition of significant
achievements in the field of tobacco control. The
award is given to individuals and institutions who have demonstrated a
long-term commitment and contribution in key areas like research, capacity
building, promotion of policy or legislation and advocacy, among other
activities, to advance tobacco control.
The theme of World No Tobacco Day, 2005 focuses on the
role of health professionals in tobacco control. Health professionals include
medical doctors, nurses, dentists, midwives, psychologists, pharmacists,
physiotherapists, and other health related professions.
Taking forward the theme of the World No Tobacco Day
2005, Professor (Dr) Rama Kant was awarded the
World No Tobacco Day Award. This award was presented to Dr Rama Kant by Dr S .J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India.
Professor (Dr) Rama Kant is a
consultant surgeon and senior Professor at King George’s Medical College,
Lucknow.
He is also the Chief Medical Superintendent of Gandhi Memorial &
Associated Hospitals in Lucknow. Prof. Rama Kant has been deeply involved in anti-tobacco
activities and actively supports various health care initiatives in rural
parts of Uttar Pradesh. He is also the
Principal Investigator of the Tobacco Cessation Centre in KGMC supported by
the WHO/MoH&FW. Besides regular on-site
counseling for tobacco de-addiction, he has spearheaded various interventions
for tobacco control by mobilizing children and youth to refrain from tobacco
use and act as instruments for tobacco cessation in their families.
