Psychosocial Support for Children and Adolescents in Disaster Situations

Psychosocial support is an essential component of disaster relief and rehabilitation. Children and adolescents need special attention in such situations. Care and service providers have to be sensitized to the needs, and the approaches have to be tailored for these special groups. The  ‘Expressions’ programme at the Child Development and Adolescent Health Centre, Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, led by Dr Jitendra Nagpal, has developed a manual for children and adolescents in disaster situations. The manual was developed with inputs from UNICEF, and in collaboration with WHO Representative’s office in India. The manual is based on the model of the post Tsunami psycho social support undertaken by the UN team for recovery support in Tamil Nadu. The manual is organised in separate sections for the facilitators and service providers and can be readily used by teachers and care givers as an early intervention. This manual will help to bridge the gap in this important area of psychosocial support in disaster situations. More>…
