Value of Pharmacists and their Role in Healthcare
World Health Day program 29th April 2006 – Organised
by Karnataka State Pharmacy Council in
collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO)
World health day is celebrated on
April 7th annually to profile, important health issues from world
health organization. This year theme is on human resources for health. World
health day is celebrated throughout the world by WHO,
NGO’s, government organizations, FIP and other professional bodies. The focus
is to emphasize the need to address the health work force issues. Karnataka
state pharmacy council celebrated this world health day program to stress the
pharmacists related issues such as, need of continuing pharmacy education
program and on the need to provide value added services to the patients by
community and hospital pharmacists and other related important issues
Karnataka State Pharmacy Council
conducted the World Health Day program on 29th April 2006. The
program was coordinated by Ms. P. K. Lakshmi,
Director, Drug Information
Center, KSPC, Bangalore. Dr. S. Srinivasan,
Secretary, Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Karnataka state Branch and Dr.
V. C. Shanmuganandan, Secretary, Indian Medial
Association, Karnataka state Branch were the Chief Guests of the function.
Ms. P. K. Lakshmi gave introduction about the world
health day program and explained the theme of the program to the pharmacists.
She emphasized the need for the awareness of pharmacists to understand their
duties towards the patients as well as the need to create awareness among the
public regarding the role of pharmacists. Dr. S. Srinivasan
talked about the lack of recognition of pharmacists in the society and means
to improve themselves to get recognized by the doctors and other paramedical
professionals by improving their knowledge and getting involved in social
activities such as
adopting a village by a community pharmacists to deal with some
of the healthcare issues such tuberculosis, importance of hygiene etc., so as
to promote the value of the pharmacist among the public. Dr. V. C. Shanmuganandan addressed the audience on the importance
of patient counseling and prescription errors and importance of working hand
in hand with doctors for the benefit of the patients.
Mr. D. A. Gundurao,
President, Karnataka State Pharmacy Council, shared his views on need for the
continuing education for the pharmacists for professional upgradation
and role of Pharmacy Council of India in bringing the amendment on mandatory
continuing education program for the pharmacists for the renewals of the pharmacists registration to practice pharmacy. He also
discussed with the pharmacists about the future plans of Karnataka State
Pharmacy Council’s online CE programs, which can be accessed by the
pharmacist anywhere in Karnataka.
The function was attended by various
groups of pharmacists from academics, community, hospital, clinical and
industry. Also the participants include IPA joint secretary and other few
office bearers of IPA
