National Workshop on Developing
Protocols for Morbidity Field Surveys
23-24 Nov. 2006
Objectives
To
prepare a protocol for morbidity surveys for some common major diseases.
To
share with researchers their experiences and information on disease
prevalence based both on field surveys and other sources.
Activities Undertaken
A pre-workshop meeting of the working
group on ‘National Workshop on Developing Protocols for Morbidity Field
Surveys’ was convened on 17-10-05 at the Institute to seek the suggestions of
the members. The following members attended the meeting:
Dr. P. S. S. Sunder Rao
Dr. D. C. S. Reddy
Dr. Arvind Pandey
Dr. K. Anand
Dr. Cherian Verghese
Shri Sunil Nandraj
Dr. T.R.Dilip
Dr. Kavita Venkataraman
Ms. Anagha
Dr. R K Gupta
Dr. Atul Juneja
In this meeting, it was pointed out
that it might be difficult to cater all the diseases and it would be
sufficient if broad guidelines for researchers could be worked out for carrying
out morbidity surveys. Though it was a difficult and challenging task but a
beginning could be made through this workshop. It was suggested that a
background document might be prepared by NIMS with the help of the working
group before organizing the workshop. The document may include sections on
introduction, methodologies including sampling designs, survey techniques,
instruments and other aspects related to morbidity studies. In the backdrop
of this meeting, the objectives of the workshop were accordingly modified and
a background paperwas
prepared for circulation to all the invited experts for discussion and their
suggestions (copy of the paper
attached).
The workshop was organized during
23-24 November. 2006. Some important topics that are considered relevant to
be included in the protocol were identified, viz: types of health studies, formulation of
health studies objectives, health survey
designs, sample size determination and related issues, methods of
collecting health/ morbidity data, acute diseases & chronic diseases
suggested for field studies & their operational definitions,
questionnaires development for morbidity surveys and logistics & field
management of morbidity studies. The experts from the fields of medical
statistics & medicine were invited as panelists to deliberate and discuss
on these topics in view of their broad experiences. The programme
of the workshop was divided into a number of sessions (copy of programme attached). On the first day of the workshop,
there were presentations followed by discussions. On the second day,
two working groups were formed, one
on ‘planning of health surveys’ and the other on ‘execution of health
surveys’. After elaborate discussions, each of the groups presented its
report. The suggestions of the working are attached.
It
was recommended that a document, which could provide guidelines to the
morbidity surveyors/researchers, might be prepared with the help of the
experts in the field. WHO may be approached for funding with a proposal
highlighting the work to be accomplished and the financial involvement for
doing the same. It was unanimously felt that such a
document is the need of the time for providing necessary guidance and also to
bring in uniformity in data collection.
Achievements of the activity
undertaken in relation to WHO programme area.
A good beginning has been made
towards protocol development for morbidity field studies in the workshop. The
elaborate views expressed by the experts in the workshop resulted in
providing broader but exhaustive guidelines and that would provide basis for
the preparing the document.
Whether the Technical Report
submitted and accepted by the Government/Ministry of Health and Family
welfare
Yes, to Indian Council of Medical
Research

suggestions of the workshop, the chapterization
