A new initiative for a healthy nation

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has launched the pilot phase of the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPDCS) on the 4th of January 2008.

High burden pf premature mortality and morbidity, increasing economic burden and limitations in the existing health system has led to the formulation of this national programme.  The Honourable Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare highlighted the need for integrated prevention of NCDs through healthy lifestyles. Shri. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, chief guest of the launch, offered the support of the Planning Commission and emphasized the need for prevention programmes in existing health care schemes such as Central Government Health Services and Employment State Insurance scheme.

The objectives of the pilot phase are :

    1) to assess the prevalence of risk factors for Non- Communicable Diseases.

    2) risk reduction for prevention of NCDs (Diabetes , CVD and Stroke).

    3) early diagnosis and appropriate management of Diabetes, Cardiovascular  Diseases and Stroke.

The pilot phase is undertaken in 6 districts in 6 states with a financial outlay of 50 million rupees.
