Launch of Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation : A New hope for rehabilitation of people affected with leprosy

 

On October 10th 2007 the “Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation” was launched in Delhi with the aim to ensure a dignified social and economic existence for people affected by the disease. Many persons who have had leprosy lead a life removed from their homes as a consequence of social stigma associated with the disease.

Mr Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Elimination of Leprosy, was present for the occasion. Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, former president of India, stated “Let the brain ease the pain”. The event was also attended by Mr. Tarun Das, Chief Mentor of Confederation of Indian industry (CII) and Board Member of Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation, Ms. Sayeeda Imam, Creative Director of Contract Advertising Agency and Board Member of Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation, senior WHO officials and other dignitaries.

During a meeting with Dr S J Habayeb, WHO Representative in India, Mr Sasakawa reiterated his commitment to support India’s leprosy program.
