World AIDS Day 2006: Drug Abuse & HIV/AIDS

    

On the occasion of World AIDS Day, a series of public events were organized to generate greater public awareness and engagement on the problem of Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS. An Awareness Campaign Run and Seminar were organized to spread awareness amongst children and youth. Hundreds of young people participated in these events. Other participants included recovered addicts, medical doctors, drug counselors, heads of institutions and sports persons.

Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt Sheila Dikshit; Hon'ble Health & Social Welfare Minister of Delhi, Dr Yoganand Shastri; Dr. S. J. Habayeb, WHO Representative to India; UNODC & UNAIDS Representatives started the symbolic run along with children from orphanage, slums , school and stadiums in front of the Delhi Secretariat.

The Run was followed by an awareness raising seminar involving 250 participants. The sessions focused on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse as health and social hazard, issues relating to injecting drug users and HIV/AIDS, Prevention and Control - reducing risk behavior. Various educational institutions participated in the event.

Both of these events were coordinated by the Asian Marathon Champion, Sunita Godara, Director Health Fitness Trust with the support of WHO India Office and Department of Social Welfare, Government of Delhi. In continuation to these events, a follow up awareness program for slum children and women was undertaken on 3 December 2006 in Kalkaji Sudhar Camp Slum Development Center operated by the Health Fitness Trust.
