DOTS in India Crosses 1 Billion Population Coverage

India’s Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), which is based on the WHO-recommended Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) strategy, has undergone unprecedented rapid expansion in recent years.  By the end of March 2005, RNTCP population coverage crossed one billion.  This is a significant milestone in TB control efforts in India.  WHO India Country office wishes to congratulate the Government of India on this great achievement, and to commend all donors and stakeholders for their commitment and continued support to RNTCP.  WHO would like to take this opportunity to thank CIDA, DFID and USAID for supporting the WHO technical assistance to RNTCP.
